Detection of Allee effects in marine fishes: analytical biases generated by data availability and model selection

2017

The demographic Allee effect, or depensation, implies positive association between per capita population growth rate and population size at low abundances, thereby lowering growth ability of sparse populations. This can have far-reaching consequences on population recovery ability and colonization success. In the context of marine fishes, there is a widespread perception that Allee effects are rare or non-existent. However, studies that have failed to detect Allee effects in marine fishes have suffered from several fundamental methodological and data limitations. In the present study, we challenge the prevailing perception about the rarity of Allee effects by analysing nine populations of …

Atlantic cod recovery from the Allee effect zone : contrasting ecological and evolutionary rescue

2020

The ability of a population to recover from disturbances is fundamental for its persistence. Impaired population recovery might be associated with a demographic Allee effect. Immigration from adjacent populations could accelerate the recovery not only by promoting population growth beyond the Allee effect threshold but also by bringing in advantageous genotypes. We explore the nature and role of ecological and evolutionary rescue in an Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua Gadidae) population fished below its Allee effect threshold. We utilize an eco-evolutionary model and simulate scenarios, where the target population evolves in response to selective fishing and sample immigrants from (a) a source p…

Temporary Allee effects among non‐stationary recruitment dynamics in depleted gadid and flatfish populations

2021

Many considerably declined fish populations have not fully recovered despite reductions in fishing pressure. One of the possible causes of impaired recovery is the (demographic) Allee effect. To investigate whether low-abundance recruitment dynamics can switch between compensation and depensation, the latter implying the presence of the Allee effect, we analysed the stock–recruitment time series of 17 depleted cod-type and flatfish populations using a Bayesian change point model. The recruitment dynamics were represented with the sigmoidal Beverton–Holt and the Saila–Lorda stock–recruitment models, allowing the parameters of the models to shift at a priori unknown change points. Our synthes…

Allee effect in a manipulative parasite within poikilothermic host under temperature change

2022

AbstractTemperature and intraspecific competition are important factors influencing the growth of all organisms, including parasites. The temperature increase is suggested to stimulate the development of parasites within poikilothermic hosts. However, at high parasite densities, this effect could be diminished, due to stronger intraspecific competition. Our study, for the first time, addressed the joint effects of warming and parasite abundances on parasite growth in poikilothermic hosts. The growth of the common fish parasite larvae (trematode Diplostomum pseudospathaceum) within the rainbow trout at different infection intensities and temperatures (15°C and 18°C) was experimentally invest…

Collective Infection of Cells by Viral Aggregates Promotes Early Viral Proliferation and Reveals a Cellular-Level Allee Effect

2018

In addition to the conventional release of free, individual virions, virus dispersal can involve multi-virion assemblies that collectively infect cells. However, the implications of collective infection for viral fitness remain largely unexplored. Using vesicular stomatitis virus, here, we compare the fitness of free versus saliva-aggregated viral particles. We find that aggregation has a positive effect on early progeny production, conferring a fitness advantage relative to equal numbers of free particles in most cell types. The advantage of aggregation resides, at least partially, in increasing the cellular multiplicity of infection. In mouse embryonic fibroblasts, the per capita, short-t…

Thresholds for impaired species recovery

2015

Studies on small and declining populations dominate research in conservation biology. This emphasis reflects two overarching frameworks: the small-population paradigm focuses on correlates of increased extinction probability; the declining-population paradigm directs attention to the causes and consequences of depletion. Neither, however, particularly informs research on the determinants, rate or uncertainty of population increase. By contrast, Allee effects (positive associations between population size and realized per capita population growth rate, r realized , a metric of average individual fitness) offer a theoretical and empirical basis for identifying numerical and temporal threshol…

Diseased Social Predators

2017

Social predators benefit from cooperation in the form of increased hunting success, but may be at higher risk of disease infection due to living in groups. Here, we use mathematical modeling to investigate the impact of disease transmission on the population dynamics benefits provided by group hunting. We consider a predator-prey model with foraging facilitation that can induce strong Allee effects in the predators. We extend this model by an infectious disease spreading horizontally and vertically in the predator population. The model is a system of three nonlinear differential equations. We analyze the equilibrium points and their stability as well as one- and two-parameter bifurcations. …

Inbreeding rate modifies the dynamics of genetic load in small populations

2012

The negative fitness consequences of close inbreeding are widely recognized, but predicting the long-term effects of inbreeding and genetic drift due to limited population size is not straightforward. As the frequency and homozygosity of recessive deleterious alleles increase, selection can remove (purge) them from a population, reducing the genetic load. At the same time, small population size relaxes selection against mildly harmful mutations, which may lead to accumulation of genetic load. The efficiency of purging and the accumulation of mutations both depend on the rate of inbreeding (i.e., population size) and on the nature of mutations. We studied how increasing levels of inbreeding …

Combined impacts of the Allee effect, delay and stochasticity: Persistence analysis

2020

Abstract We study a combined influence of the Allee effect, delay and stochasticity on the base of the phenomenological Hassell mathematical model of population dynamics. This bistable dynamical model possesses a wide variety of regimes, both regular and chaotic. In the persistence zone, these regimes coexist with the trivial equilibrium that corresponds to the extinction of the population. It is shown that borders of the persistence zone are defined by the crisis and saddle-node bifurcation points. Noise-induced transitions from the persistence to the extinction are studied both numerically and analytically. Using numerical modeling, we have found that the persistence zone can decrease and…
